Today, the class practiced a little bit more about scientific notation and watched a video showing the powers of 10.

PRE-ALGEBRA

The class practiced on more inequalities for the quiz tomorrow.

ALGEBRA I

We continued reviewing for the Linear Equations Test. The test is tomorrow. Here are the answers to the last 4 questions:

44. The answer is y = -3. The line y = -2 is a horizontal line and the new line needs to be parallel to this one. So the new line will also be horizontal. Since it goes through the point (4, -3), you just have to write y = -3.

45. Slope intercept form is: y = -1/3x + 4. Standard form is x + 3y = 12 Since it is perpendicular to y = 3x - 5, the slope of the new line is -1/3 (opposite reciprocal of 3). Use point-slope form to change it into slope intercept form. Once you have that, to change it into standard form, you have to move the -1/3x to the left side by adding it. That makes it positive on the left side, but now multiply all terms by 3 to get rid of the fraction.

For the last three, you are looking at the slopes. If they are the same, the lines are parallel. If they are opposite reciprocals, the lines are perpendicular. If the slopes are neither the same OR opposite reciprocals, then it is neither parallel or perpendicular.

46. This is neither. The first slope is -3 and the second is 3. While -3 and 3 are opposites, they are not also reciprocals. So....it can't be perpendicular.

47. These are parallel. Both slopes are -5.

48. These are perpendicular. 3 and -1/3 are opposite reciprocals.
