SIXTH GRADE

Today, you are writing equations from word problems. Here are a few examples:

1. Janice won 38 stuffed animals at the zoo. She gave some to her sister and kept 22. How many did she give to her sister?

Remember, I'm not wanting you to just tell me that you subtract to find the answer. You need to be able to write an equation from the problem. In this problem, there is a total number - 38 stuffed animals. We know she gave some to her sister and kept 22. So, we will represent the amount she gave to her sister as a variable. I'll choose the letter a. The equation would be:

a + 22 = 38

a for the ones she gave to her sister, 22 for the ones she kept, and 38 for the total. Then to solve, you'd subtract 22 from both sides to find out that she gave her sister 16 stuffed animals.

2. 5 years ago, Fred was 53 years old. How old is Fred now?

Here, it is easy to see that you will be adding. But remember, first find the missing number and you will represent that with a variable. The missing number is Fred's age now. Since this will be the biggest number, we will put it first. I will use the letter f to represent Fred's current age. If I take away 5 from Fred's current age, we will get 53 - how old he was 5 years ago.

f - 5 = 53

Then to solve, you will add 5 to both sides.

Let me know if you need any help with these!

SEVENTH GRADE MATH

The class took notes on Geometry terms. We will finish notes tomorrow and begin the assignment. No homework tonight!

GEOGRAPHY

The class watched a video on the slave trade in Africa and then read about how it affected the kingdoms of Africa. Do questions #1-5 on page 349.

PRE-ALGEBRA

We continued working on the stair activity from Friday. No homework.

ALGEBRA I

#2-34 evens for Section 8.4. Let me know if you need help!

See you tomorrow,
