SIXTH GRADE

Multiplication and Division Word Problems. Remember, if you HAVE the total amount, you will write a multiplication equation and then divide to solve it. For example:

5 bags of apples cost $20. How much does one bag cost?

Here, we know the total because all five bags cost $20. So, what we are missing is how much one BAG costs. So that is our variable.

5b = $20

b represents the cost of 1 bag of apples. Since 5 bags equals $20, 5 times b equals $20. To solve, you would divide both sides by 5.

If you DO NOT have the total, you will write a division equation and multiply to solve it. For example:

3 friends split a restaurant bill evenly. Each had to pay $14. How much was the restaurant bill?

Since you don't know how much the total bill costs, that will be the variable. The friends divided the total bill by 3. That looks like this:

   b  = $14
   3

So, the bill is divided by 3 to equal 14 that each had to pay. To find the answer, multiply both sides by 3. That leaves just the b on the left side. 14 times 3 = $42.00. So the total bill was $42.00.

SEVENTH GRADE MATH

Section 8.1 - #1-23. I'm not sure the page number. This is the first section in the Geometry chapter. Let me know if you have questions!

GEOGRAPHY

We discussed the field trip to the zoo today. We are going next Tuesday and need drivers and chaperones! Please let me know as soon as possible. Then the class read about Central and South Africa. There is no homework, but there is a COUNTRY QUIZ TOMORROW! Please get notes!

PRE-ALGEBRA

We began the Barbie Bungee activity today! The class experimented dropping Barbie from various heights. They will use their experiments to determine how many rubber bands to add in order for Barbie to have a thrilling, but safe, drop from the top of the loft. (Thrilling means getting as close to the floor as possible, but safe means, not hitting the floor!) We will see which group wins tomorrow.

ALGEBRA I

Dividing radicals. If you really need a video, email or text me. I will be happy to do a few examples!

See you tomorrow,

Mrs. Swickey
