GEOGRAPHY
The class worked on their culture project today. Be sure you have everything you need for your social web, traditions, language, and music for tomorrow so you can work on your poster.
PRE-ALGEBRA
The class practiced on more inequalities for the quiz tomorrow.
ALGEBRA I
We continued reviewing for the Linear Equations Test. The test is tomorrow. Here are the answers to the last 4 questions:
44. The answer is y = -3. The line y = -2 is a horizontal line and the new line needs to be parallel to this one. So the new line will also be horizontal. Since it goes through the point (4, -3), you just have to write y = -3.
45. Slope intercept form is: y = -1/3x + 4. Standard form is x + 3y = 12 Since it is perpendicular to y = 3x - 5, the slope of the new line is -1/3 (opposite reciprocal of 3). Use point-slope form to change it into slope intercept form. Once you have that, to change it into standard form, you have to move the -1/3x to the left side by adding it. That makes it positive on the left side, but now multiply all terms by 3 to get rid of the fraction.
For the last three, you are looking at the slopes. If they are the same, the lines are parallel. If they are opposite reciprocals, the lines are perpendicular. If the slopes are neither the same OR opposite reciprocals, then it is neither parallel or perpendicular.
46. This is neither. The first slope is -3 and the second is 3. While -3 and 3 are opposites, they are not also reciprocals. So....it can't be perpendicular.
47. These are parallel. Both slopes are -5.
48. These are perpendicular. 3 and -1/3 are opposite reciprocals.
Let me know if you have any questions!

On Friday, the class helped color pictures to decorate my room for the carnival. Thanks for your help! No homework.
SEVENTH GRADE MATH
On Friday, the class helped set up for the carnival.
GEOGRAPHY
On Friday, the class took notes over socio-economic factors. No homework.
PRE-ALGEBRA
We finished the test review. The equations and expressions test is on Monday. Here are the last three problems that we didn't get to:
22.
12 + 8 -3g = 7g + g - 13
20 - 3g = 8g - 13 (combine like terms on each side. 12 + 8 on the left and 7g + g on the right.)
+ 3g +3g
20 = 11g - 13 (move the -3g to the right side by adding 3g to both sides)
+13 + 13
33 = 11g move the -13 to the left side
divide both sides by 11 to get the g by itself. The answer is:
3 = g
23.
9y + 2 - 5y = -13 + y + 6
4y + 2 = -7 + y (combine 9y -5y on the left to get 4y and -13 + 6 to get -7 on the right)
-y -y
3y + 2 = -7 (move the +y on the right side to the left by subtracting it on both sides.)
-2 -2
3y = -9 (move the +2 to the right side by subtracting 2 from both sides.)
y = -3 (divide both sides by 3)
25. 7(3b - 2) + 10 = -(3b -20)
21b -14 + 10 = -3b +20 (distribute the 7 to the 3b and -2 to get 21b -14. Then distribute the
negative sign to the 3b - 20. It changes BOTH signs so you have -3b + 20.
21b -4 = -3b + 20 (combine like terms on the left side -14 + 10 = -4)
+3b +3b
24b - 4 = 20 (get the -3b to the left side by adding 3b to both sides.)
+4 +4
24b = 24 (move the 4 to the right side by adding 4)
b = 1 (divide both sides by 24)

GEOGRAPHY
The class took notes on conflict in various regions today. The homework is an atlas activity page.
PRE-ALGEBRA
The homework is more practice with multi-step equations. Remember, when you are solving an equation and you eliminate the variable completely, and all you have left is something like "-2 = 4", your answer is "NO SOLUTION". The reason for this is, -2 does not equal 4 so it's a false statement. That means there isn't a number that would work for the variable and make the equation true.
ALGEBRA I
There is a test tomorrow over distance, coin, and mixture problems.
See you tomorrow! Mrs. Swickey

SIXTH GRADE
Today's homework is #1-36 on pages 418-419. The information you will need to do all of these is in the charts on page 416-417. Remember, you are using the metric system ONLY. Do not give any answers such as inches, feet, yards, miles, ounces, or pounds. Those are all measurements in the US Customary System. We will do those in another unit. The metric system main measurements are meters for length, grams for mass, and liters for capacity. Use the charts to help you and write me with any questions you may have. This is actually a difficult lesson to a do a video for because it requires you to think logically to determine the various measurements you would use.
7th GRADE MATH
Today's assignment is the worksheet over greatest common factor and reducing fractions to simplest form. If you have any questions, please let me know!
GEOGRAPHY
The class took notes on landforms and bodies of water today. We will continue notes tomorrow. The quiz over all land and water forms will be on Friday!

SIXTH GRADE
Today's assignment is a worksheet over dividing decimals by whole numbers. On this worksheet, you might have to add a zero at the end to finish dividing. This class is so smart! They already knew how to do that.
SEVENTH GRADE MATH
We reviewed for the test over Integers today. The test is tomorrow. You will have to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers as well as order integers, find the absolute value of a number, and simplify integers with exponents.
GEOGRAPHY
We discussed a fun project today and the first group began tracing. The class will be working in small groups to create a relief map (using the air dry clay from the supply list!) of a continent. There are five groups. Last year's maps turned out wonderful! I think this class will really enjoy making them. There is no homework.
PRE-ALGEBRA
Today's homework is the assignment on real numbers. Remember how real numbers are sorted:
All numbers are REAL (in this class). Then you have two categories. Irrational and Rational.
Irrational Numbers include all non-terminating, non-repeating decimals. Things like the square root of 6 and pi. Also a number like: 0.572358764..... it would be irrational because it never ends (the dots at the end tell you that) and there isn't a pattern.
If it isn't irrational, then it will be rational.
Rational Numbers: Any number that can be written as a fraction. This includes terminating and repeating decimals. To terminate means to END. So a number like 12.25 is terminating because it is just twelve and twenty-five hundredths. It doesn't keep going on and on and on. A number is rational if the decimal repeats. Things like 5.4444444.... is a rational number. That is actually the same as the mixed number five and four ninths.
Integers: All the whole numbers and their opposites. (No fractions and decimals here.) Things like -5, -100, 0, 3, 10, etc.
Whole Numbers: This starts at 0 and counts up from there...0,1,2,3.... (no fractions and decimals and also no negative numbers.)
Natural Numbers: These are your counting numbers. 1,2,3... So the same as whole numbers except there is no zero. Again, no fractions, decimals, or negative numbers.
ALGEBRA I
We spent the class period going over problems for the test tomorrow! No homework.

SEVENTH GRADE MATH
Lesson 7.3 - Triangles. Remember, you can classify a triangle by its sides or by its angles.
By its sides:
No sides the same length: Scalene.
2 sides the same length: Isoceles
All three sides the same length: Equilateral
By its angles:
Acute: all three angles are acute
Right: One angle is a right angle
Obtuse: one angle is obtuse
So, a triangle can be a right triangle that is also isosceles. That means it has one right angle and two sides are the same length.
Also, don't forget that the three angles of any triangle add up to 180 degrees. So if you know two of them, add them together and subtract from 180 to find the third angle.

SIXTH GRADE
Multiplication and Division Word Problems. Remember, if you HAVE the total amount, you will write a multiplication equation and then divide to solve it. For example:
5 bags of apples cost $20. How much does one bag cost?
Here, we know the total because all five bags cost $20. So, what we are missing is how much one BAG costs. So that is our variable.
5b = $20
b represents the cost of 1 bag of apples. Since 5 bags equals $20, 5 times b equals $20. To solve, you would divide both sides by 5.
If you DO NOT have the total, you will write a division equation and multiply to solve it. For example:
3 friends split a restaurant bill evenly. Each had to pay $14. How much was the restaurant bill?
Since you don't know how much the total bill costs, that will be the variable. The friends divided the total bill by 3. That looks like this:
b = $14
3
So, the bill is divided by 3 to equal 14 that each had to pay. To find the answer, multiply both sides by 3. That leaves just the b on the left side. 14 times 3 = $42.00. So the total bill was $42.00.
SEVENTH GRADE MATH

We began the Barbie Bungee activity today! The class experimented dropping Barbie from various heights. They will use their experiments to determine how many rubber bands to add in order for Barbie to have a thrilling, but safe, drop from the top of the loft. SIXTH GRADE
Today, you are writing equations from word problems. Here are a few examples:
1. Janice won 38 stuffed animals at the zoo. She gave some to her sister and kept 22. How many did she give to her sister?
Remember, I'm not wanting you to just tell me that you subtract to find the answer. You need to be able to write an equation from the problem. In this problem, there is a total number - 38 stuffed animals. We know she gave some to her sister and kept 22. So, we will represent the amount she gave to her sister as a variable. I'll choose the letter a. The equation would be:
a + 22 = 38
a for the ones she gave to her sister, 22 for the ones she kept, and 38 for the total. Then to solve, you'd subtract 22 from both sides to find out that she gave her sister 16 stuffed animals.
2. 5 years ago, Fred was 53 years old. How old is Fred now?
Here, it is easy to see that you will be adding. But remember, first find the missing number and you will represent that with a variable. The missing number is Fred's age now. Since this will be the biggest number, we will put it first. I will use the letter f to represent Fred's current age. If I take away 5 from Fred's current age, we will get 53 - how old he was 5 years ago.
f - 5 = 53
Then to solve, you will add 5 to both sides.
Let me know if you need any help with these!
SEVENTH GRADE MATH
The class took notes on Geometry terms. We will finish notes tomorrow and begin the assignment. No homework tonight!
GEOGRAPHY
The class watched a video on the slave trade in Africa and then read about how it affected the kingdoms of Africa. Do questions #1-5 on page 349.
