SIXTH GRADE MATH

Today's assignment is the practice worksheet with adding and subtracting decimals. Remember to always put a decimal point to the RIGHT of any whole number. Be sure to line up decimal points to add or subtract and put zeros in empty spaces (you don't have to in addition, but you MUST in subtraction.)

SEVENTH GRADE MATH

Today, I gave the class time to work on corrections and have a little extra practice with adding and subtracting integers. No homework!

SEVENTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

The class learned how to work with exponents and integers. The assignment is the Exponents worksheet.

EIGHTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

We spent a little more time on organizing real numbers today as well as how to use order of operations. The assignment is the Real Numbers - B worksheet.

ALGEBRA I

Today the class reviewed how to multiply and divide real numbers. The assignment is #4-120 every OTHER even. (so...you are doing all problems that are multiples of 4) on pages 56-57.

See you tomorrow!

SIXTH GRADE MATH

I explained to the class about how to do corrections today and passed back graded papers. I accept corrected papers at any time before the end of the quarter. Corrections need to be done on a separate piece of paper and stapled to the front of the graded assignment. The student only needs to do the problems they missed. It is not required but is a great way to earn points back towards his/her grade as well as practice and improve math skills. I award half credit for corrected work. So, if a student missed 8 problems on an assignment and got them all correct on the corrections, he/she would get 4 points back on that assignment. It can really make a difference! The class worked on corrections for the remainder of class today.

SEVENTH GRADE MATH

Today, the class learned how to multiply and divide integers. The assignment is page 46 #3-27.

SEVENTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

The class learned how to multiply and divide integers today. The assignment is the handout with practice problems. Everyone finished in class!

SIXTH GRADE MATH

Today the class took notes on adding and subtracting with decimal numbers. The assignment for today is page 34 #18-27. You do NOT have to estimate today. Just do the subtraction.

Many students were confused yesterday about what to do. I am giving everyone who misunderstood a second day to complete yesterday's assignment. You need to first estimate - whether regular estimation or front-end estimation with money - and then find the actual sum of the numbers. You will have TWO answer for each on yesterday's assignment. Watch the video I posted for the examples.

SEVENTH GRADE MATH

Today's assignment is the adding and subtracting integers color worksheet. Remember to follow the rules in your folders!

SEVENTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

You also have the adding and subtracting integers color worksheet.

EIGHTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

Today's assignment is page 88, #1-30. You are evaluating expressions with powers and exponents and simplifying using the order of operations. Remember to use our new method, GEMA. (grouping symbols, exponential expressions, multiplicative operations, and additive operations) Multiplicative operations includes both multiplying and dividing. Additive operations includes both adding and subtracting. If you have any questions, let me know!

ALGEBRA I

Today's assignment is page 40 #2-80 evens. You are adding with real numbers today. You are doing signed numbers (including fractions and decimals). Remember the rule for adding with signs: if the signs are the same ADD and keep the same sign. If the signs are different, SUBTRACT, and use the sign of the bigger number. It doesn't matter if you have fractions or decimals. You do the same thing! Email me if you have any questions.

See you tomorrow!

SIXTH GRADE MATH

Today's assignment is p 34 #8-17 on the lesson for Adding and Subtracting Decimals. The class learned how to estimate decimal answers two different ways. We focused on adding decimals today. They need to both estimate and find the sum. Here is a video with some examples:

SEVENTH GRADE MATH

The homework for today is the subtracting integers worksheet. Remember KEEP, CHANGE, CHANGE. Keep the first number the same, change the subtraction sign to addition, and change the sign of the second number. Once you've done that, just follow addition rules!

SEVENTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

Your assignment for today is the same as 7th grade math above!

EIGHTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

The homework is the integer operations review worksheet (with the glasses). Then the class began notes for tomorrow's assignment. We will continue the notes tomorrow!

ALGEBRA I

Today's homework is page 32-33 #48-92 (skip #64). Evaluating Expressions, translating expressions and equations, and Is it a Solution?

See you tomorrow!

I just discovered that this post did not go live Friday night! I apologize if you've been waiting for this information.
SIXTH GRADE MATH

Today's assignment is the Rounding Decimals worksheet. Remember, on the section where you are rounding to the nearest cent, the cent is in the hundredths place. So be sure you are rounding to the hundredths place. You will have a number that is a proper amount of money. For the table at the bottom, round the number on the left three times. First to the tenth, then to the hundredth, and then to the thousandth. Be sure to start with the original number each time.

SEVENTH GRADE MATH

The class played an integer game today to help reinforce adding integers. They all did a fantastic job! I'm very impressed with how quickly they have caught on to adding integers. No homework!

SEVENTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

The class played an integer game today and did very well practicing adding integers! Today's homework is the integer worksheet. (I posted that it was yesterday's homework, but I got it mixed up with the other 7th grade math class!)

EIGHTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

The class practiced multiplying and dividing integers today. Everyone finished the worksheet in class and then played the card game they learned yesterday to practice adding integers.

ALGEBRA I

The class reviewed order of operations. We have a new phrase to help remember the correct order that will hopefully be less confusing. GEMA. It stands for grouping symbols (braces, brackets, parentheses, absolute value), exponential expressions (exponents and square roots), multiplicative operations (multiplying or dividing), and additive operations (adding or subtracting). The homework is page 32 #2-46. Please email me if you are stuck at all. I'm not doing a video tonight, but I can if you need help!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Swickey

Welcome back to school! We are off to a great start in middle school. Last Thursday and Friday we spent a lot of time going over middle school procedures and playing getting to know you games. On Friday, the students walked through all their classes and received textbooks, and then we sorted into Houses and played our first tournament! Today was our first day on the regular schedule. Everyone did a great job getting to the right places. Find your class below for more information about what we did in math today.

SIXTH GRADE

Today, we set up our Interactive Notebooks. These are essentially folders where each student will keep their notes, foldables and other important info for math class. There is a table of contents so that they can always find the information that they need. I am looking forward to making the notebooks really work for the students this year. The sixth graders also learned about this blog, so hopefully everyone is checking it out tonight! The class also received the Middle School Homework Policy. Parents, please read over the policy, sign, and return to school. Students, give the signed policy to your House mentor in the morning. There is no homework today, but tomorrow, we will jump in with a quick review of whole number operations and then begin our decimals unit on Wednesday.
