I know I haven't been very good with keeping up my blog each night! I am going to make it a New Year's Resolution and really work on keeping it up to date so both parents and students have the information they need.

For today, Sixth Grade has a Divisibility Rules #2 worksheet. It will look very similar to yesterday's homework, but it's a second page to give them more practice.

Seventh Grade does not have homework tonight, but they are retaking a test over operations with fractions and scientific notation tomorrow! Be sure you go over the review again tonight!

Seventh Grade Pre-Algebra is doing a worksheet with practice on how to change fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions. Here is a video with a few examples:
Eighth Grade Pre-Algebra worked on an in-class activity today. No homework! We will finish tomorrow.

Algebra I finished their linear equations test today! No homework.

See you tomorrow for our last day before Christmas Break!

SIXTH GRADE

Today's assignment is the handout about outliers and their effect on the mean. An outlier is a number in a data set that is much smaller or much larger than the other numbers. In other words, it's the number that doesn't belong with the rest. It's different. For example, given the following data set:

25, 28, 24, 8, 23, 27

8 is the outlier because it is the number that is different from the others. Sometimes the outlier can be larger.

I can find the mean of the 6 numbers above (including the outlier) by adding and dividing by 6. The sum of the numbers is 135 and divided by 6 is 22.5, so with the outlier, the mean is 22.5.

If I took the outlier out, then the sum of the other 5 numbers would be 127. If I divide 127 by 5 (not 6, since I took a number out), I get 25.4

You can see, including the outlier, the mean is smaller. So a small outlier will bring the mean down. The same works for an outlier that is much larger. It will raise the mean.

SEVENTH GRADE

You are changing scientific notation to standard form and standard form to scientific notation. Please email me if you need help!

Then the students worked a problem to figure out how many inches the seas have risen over the last 20 years. We discussed our responsibility to all of God's creation and things we can do to help reduce our negative impact on the planet.  There is no homework!

SEVENTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

Evaluating Variable Expressions worksheet. Remember, first change the variables to the values given. Then simplify using the order of operations. GEMA. Also, remember that any number "stuck to" a parentheses or another variable means that you multiply.

Example: 3(2x + 4) ; use x =5

First, you would replace x with 5 and multiply it by 2 since it says 2x. So, it would look like this:

3(2 times 5 + 4)
3(10 + 4)
3(14)

Now you would multiply 3 and 14 to get 42.

EIGHTH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA

We reviewed for the test over Real Numbers today. Please go over the review tonight! The test is tomorrow.

SIXTH GRADE MATH

I explained to the class about how to do corrections today and passed back graded papers. I accept corrected papers at any time before the end of the quarter. Corrections need to be done on a separate piece of paper and stapled to the front of the graded assignment. The student only needs to do the problems they missed. It is not required but is a great way to earn points back towards his/her grade as well as practice and improve math skills. I award half credit for corrected work. So, if a student missed 8 problems on an assignment and got them all correct on the corrections, he/she would get 4 points back on that assignment. It can really make a difference! The class worked on corrections for the remainder of class today.

SIXTH GRADE MATH

Today the class took notes on adding and subtracting with decimal numbers. The assignment for today is page 34 #18-27. You do NOT have to estimate today. Just do the subtraction.

Many students were confused yesterday about what to do. I am giving everyone who misunderstood a second day to complete yesterday's assignment. You need to first estimate - whether regular estimation or front-end estimation with money - and then find the actual sum of the numbers. You will have TWO answer for each on yesterday's assignment. Watch the video I posted for the examples.

SEVENTH GRADE MATH

Today's assignment is the adding and subtracting integers color worksheet. Remember to follow the rules in your folders!

I just wanted to post a hello to St. Charles students and parents and say that I hope your summer is going well so far. It's the end of June already, but before you know it, we will be getting ready to start school back up again!

Stay cool in this heat and stay safe, but enjoy the rest of the summer! I'm looking forward to seeing familiar faces as well as meeting our new students.
